Maury made a statement on the road Friday night against rival Highland Springs. Au’Tori Newkirk led the Commodores to a 38-7 win, fueled by his 327 passing yards & 4 touchdowns.
The nationally ranked Commodores (2-0), jumped to a 24-0 unanswered lead over The Springers.
Highland Springs was coming off another disappointing home loss last week to Peninsula District Powerhouse Phoebus, 23-7.
Maury’s Damon McDaniel Jr. caught eight passes for 95 yards.
The always dominant Maury defense allowed only 113 yards in a shutout, with the lone Highland Springs Touchdown coming on a kickoff return.

Leslie Hines had a big day, with five tackles for loss among his eight defensive stops.
The #1 ranked player in the state, Clemson-bound defensive end Ari Watford scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery, forced by Hines in the first quarter.
#7 Maury QB Au’Tori Newkirk
Newkirk was 4 for 4 on the Commodores’ opening drive, capping it with a 22-yard touchdown to McDaniel.
The lead jumped to 14-0 later in the first when Leslie Hines strip-sacked Highland Springs quarterback Nelson Lane, and Ari Watford scooped the loose ball returning it all the way to the endzone.
The lead went up to 21 points early in the second quarter when Newkirk found LeBron Bond for a 78-yard touchdown.

Kendall Daniels contributed to the scoring barrage with a 20-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth.
One play after the Springers’ Jalen Padmore ran a kickoff back 60 yards for a touchdown, Au’Tori Newkirk responded with 53 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Eli Moss.
